Kankhajura, the web series that was just released and is now available on OTTplay Premium and SonyLIV, is still being discussed for its underappreciated performances and magical moments. OTTplay interviewed the helmer Chandan Arora, who explained what worked well in the program, in order to further discuss the actual magic that the series produced. Additionally, he speculates on the likelihood of a second season.

Walk me through the steps involved in working on Kankhajura. How did it occur? Why did you like the story, and how did you persuade your cast to join this series, given that it's evident that the focus is solely on one actor, even if the others have their few moments every now and then?

Magpie, the original series, its narrative approach, and the fact that it is a thriller but not about the typical murder or drug case. The plot revolved around crime, but it was also a deeply moving tale of the relationship between two brothers. The producers were drawn to the show because the content was so intriguing. Happily, everything turned out perfectly for me. Although it may seem like the story revolves around Ashu (played by Roshan Mathew), all the other characters are equally important in shaping who he is. They are all the rings of the onion, and each one has a role in the development of events. Ashu is who he is because of all of them. Every relationship is equally crucial. It is not based on screen time. The actors were easy to persuade. Almost all of the people on the initial wishlist list joined us as soon as the procedure began.

The last episode of Kankhajura is what I would want to discuss. You skillfully drew attention to Mohit Raina at one moment while keeping Roshan Mathew out of the limelight. Considering that this was a turning point for both of the characters, what were you thinking?

I would give the performers credit for being able to grasp the characters' thoughts and for genuinely expressing what we attempted to convey. The DOP is fully aware of the frames that would capture the audience. We tend to make sure to use every tool at our disposal to make a scene work when it comes to the filmmaking. Everyone was striving for the same goal, and it appears that it has been realized.

Although the very last episode is the turning point for the majority of us because you never know what will happen, what was the most memorable moment of the series for you?

Because there was always magic in someone's performance, in some way, me and my DOP would constantly admit that we had gold in our hands. We returned with nice stuff and sufficient fuel to return the following day. That evening, the entire crew remembers the time between the two brothers when Max arrives and Ashu is tied up. They clapped their hands in unison.

Did you learn anything from Kankhajura?

The content I received was in a longer format than a feature film. Following each episode, there must be a hook to recapture the audience, which necessitates a change in writing style. I felt thrilled in both Kanneda and Kankhajura.

You have also given us a genuine glimpse into an aspect of LGBTQIA+. The series does explore a whole dark world, but there is no coercion or mockery involved. Walk me through the entire concept of Amy. Does she have a world that is waiting to be discovered?

We discussed hiring a transgender actor to play a transgender character. The original itself is written and conceptualized in a very earnest and accountable way. All the actors in Ashu's stuttering or other social themes performed them with sincerity. It's a consequence of all of that.

Why was Goa chosen as the location where the Kankhajura tale takes place? In my opinion, it may be due to its laid-back atmosphere, which ignores all the harsh realities that are occurring there, but what was your thought process behind making that choice?

Even before reading the content, I knew it shouldn't be situated in a metropolitan area like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, or Pune. It required an additional world that was close to riches and dominated by gangs. As a result, it was a pretty obvious choice.

Since the show concluded on a cliffhanger, will we be able to watch season 2 of Kankhajura?

Because there are so many characters, the tale will never be complete and will continue to evolve. Although there is a season 2 of Magpie, its release will be contingent upon how well the show is received.
