With Brad Pitt's racing movie F1 generating a lot of buzz at the box office, a recent news has captured the interest of Indian social media users. The fact that the Central Board of Film Certification decided to change a scene with the middle finger emoji has caused online debate and astonishment.
Reddit slams the Censor Board
The Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) modification of the specific emoji in a scene from Brad's F1 film caused a stir online, leaving many social media users stunned.
The film depicts Brad Pitt's character sending a text message that initially included a middle finger emoji. In the Indian version, though, the emoji has been changed to a fist emoji. "Original emoji in F1 would've got a pop from audiences in theatres...but impact here, was/is zero," reads a screenshot of the same on Reddit.
"Why they have problem with emoji," one pondered, while another said, "It's just evolving backwards."
"We went from 2014 to 1984 in just 10 years," one commenter said, while another said, "I didn't know this could actually be a point." Last week, I saw it at the theater, and the original middle finger was amazing. Cathartic in its subtlety and influence.
One social media user stated, "The heavy duty of the Censor Board is to be the middle-aged uncle teaching the Indian public."
All Indian films must be sanitized since they are only intended for children aged eight and older, according to one shared opinion. God forbid they see a middle finger and grow up to be psychopaths. That's healthy family viewing unless it's a sanskari movie like Houseful 5.
Concerning Brad's F1
Brad Pitt stars in Joseph Kosinski's F1 as Sonny Hayes, an experienced driver who rejoins Formula One after a 30-year break in order to assist a friend's squad win. Sonny struggles to assist the club in making a comeback, both on and off the track, including coming to terms with his history.
In addition to Brad Pitt, F1 features a stellar cast that includes Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Sarah Niles. The movie was filmed during actual Formula One Grand Prix weekends and included cameos from real drivers and team members. The box office for F1 has been a huge hit, with sales exceeding $200 million worldwide.
