The main creative mind behind The Beach Boys was Brian Wilson. In 1961, he established the group alongside his brothers Dennis and Carl, their cousin Mike Love, and Al Jardine, a buddy. The first single, "Surfin'," brought the band to national prominence, and shortly after their inaugural rock performance, Capital Records signed them.

No American band has ever matched the band's 36 appearances in the Billboard Top 40 in as many years. Pet Sound, their 1966 album, was also an inspiration for The Beatles. In 1967, he conceived Smile as a follow-up album, but it was aborted. The Beach Boys' popular songs included I Get Around and Surfer Girl.
