A month after the notorious remark, the debate around Kamal Haasan's statement about the Kannada language continues to rage. The actor is now prohibited by an ex parte interim injunction order issued by a Bengaluru court from making any statements against the Kannada language.

Kamal Haasan is prohibited from making comments against Kannada by a Bengaluru court

After hearing a lawsuit brought by Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) through its president, Mahesh Joshi, an Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge issued the ruling in the city on Friday. The PTI reported that the lawsuit sought an injunction to prevent Kamal Haasan from making any disparaging remarks about Kannada language and culture.

The court issued an injunction prohibiting Kamal Haasan from ‘posting, making, writing, or publishing any statement or remarks claiming linguistic superiority over Kannada language or making any statements against the Kannada language, literature, land and culture’ after hearing the complainant’s plea.

In addition, the case was scheduled for additional hearings on August 30, and Kamal Hassan was summoned by the court. On the following day, the actor will now be required to appear in court.

The argument surrounding Kamal Haasan's Kannada

In Karnataka, the debate over Kamal Haasan centers on a claim he made in support of his most recent movie, Thug Life. “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” Kamal Haasan stated at the movie's music launch in Bengaluru in May. Pro-Kannada organizations and cultural groups reacted angrily to the remark. Thug Life was not released in Karnataka as a result of Kamal Haasan's defense of his statement and rejection of an apology.

Although it was rather late, the film's producers, including Kamal Haasan, did win in court. Ultimately, the picture was never shown in Karnataka, and its commercial performance elsewhere was mediocre.

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam reunited after 37 years in Thug Life. But the movie didn't get much affection from either the audience or the critics. With Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ali Fazal, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, and Tanikella Bharani as co-stars, Thug Life only made ₹93 crore globally. Netflix is currently broadcasting it.
