John discussed his experience as an actor in Hollywood thus far in an interview with Vanity Fair, adding that it was by sheer chance that Margot Robbie approached him about playing Ken in Barbie.

Literally across the street from one another, we argued about whether I was performing Barbie or Fast X. Come over and do Barbie, she urged. I promised I would do anything. I have faith in your project and think it will be great since it contradicts how people see me. What difference does it make? I prefer to concentrate on what could go well rather than what could go wrong. I always follow my gut instincts. What might be the worst thing that may occur?
