Amruta Subhash Recalls Naseeruddin Shah’s Tough Critique: ‘He Yelled, Saying He’d Rather See Me Fail’

After seeing Amruta Subhash perform on stage, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah had a few words for her. Amruta told The Lallantop in an interview that she had anticipated ‘Naseer saab’ to compliment her performance and was already really pleased of herself for getting applause on stage. After the performance, Naseeruddin expressed his worry for her, but he simply gave her a telling off.
The reason Naseeruddin yelled at Amruta
Amruta continued to describe the events that occurred during the engagement. During her performance, she said that there was a particular moment when her character had to weep, and that she would make sure to get the audience to clap at that point. She repeated the action one day when she saw Naseer saab was there, and she felt happy about it. Notably, Naseer Saab also attended the play's second performance.
She went to the tea shop to meet him after the performance. She said, "He came up to me and he was like, ‘Amruta...' I was like, ‘Yes sir', and he said, ‘I watched your play’ and the proud me was like, ‘Okay and?’ He then said, ‘Beta, I am concerned.’ I was taken aback.” I felt like he should be less concerned about my work since I was getting such positive feedback.
You are forcing yourself on the role, he claimed
Then he told me, "Beta, I watched both the shows, and you did the same thing for claps." He was quite upset. "I would rather see you failing at something new rather than doing the same thing again and again for claps, okay?" I replied, "Okay, sir, sorry." He inquired as to whether the character even had to weep. You're not letting the character discover anything new because you're forcing yourself on it, he claimed. As an actor, you'll be repetitive. You will be done with your profession. That incident changed something in me and altered something in me.
Amruta is a National Award-winning actress who has appeared in the films Killa, Vihir, Contract, Raman Raghav 2.0, Gully Boy, and Dhamaka. Vinay Pathak and Svar Kamble were among the cast members of her most recent film, Chidiya. The movie, which was directed by Mehran Amrohi, was released in theatres on May 30.
