Lukman Avaran has repeatedly demonstrated his acting ability in several Malayalam films. Alappuzha Gymkhana, the latest sports drama by Khalid Rahman, is part of the young star's body of work. In an exclusive interview with OTTplay, the Saudi Vellaka star discussed his enthusiasm for Alappuzha Gymkhana and his experience collaborating with directors who have a distinctive storytelling approach.

What was the most thrilling aspect of your choice to face Antony Joshua at Alappuzha Gymkhana?

I was looking forward to Khalid Rahman's upcoming direction just like everyone else. I didn't hesitate to make my decision because I have complete faith in him as a director. The fact that this was his second directorial effort following Thallumaala was the primary factor in my interest. Furthermore, actors hardly ever get the chance to take on physically demanding roles. In fact, getting ready for boxing and finishing rigorous workouts was thrilling. This also provided motivation to maintain physical fitness. Prior to the three months of rigorous training, preparations started slowly. In conclusion, I'm happy that all of these endeavors were worthwhile after reading the glowing reviews of the movie and its characters.

You began your film career with supporting roles alongside popular Malayalam actors like Soubin Shahir, Kunchacko Boban, and Mammootty. How did your acting career be affected by the experiences?

I was fortunate to have such opportunities from the beginning, as you stop to consider. Sharing the screen with these actors has tremendously helped the performer in me. I gained more knowledge as an individual and as an artist.

Which of your movies do you believe merited greater attention?

I expected greater praise for movies like Corona Dhavan, Anchakkallakokkan, and Perumani. Each of them has a unique style and atmosphere that merits recognition. I always have great expectations for the films I work on, but sometimes they don't meet our expectations. I am really thankful for the chance to work with skilled performers, technicians, and directors. I don't get too upset about flaws, and I'm an easygoing film lover.

Do you intentionally choose to work with directors who have unusual narrative styles?

All I can say is that working with directors like them makes me feel fortunate. It's fascinating to observe how each director interprets a scene and molds the performers into their roles. Each set generates a distinct ambiance that gives us as performers greater freedom. I've also had the privilege of reuniting with directors I’ve worked with before. This makes me feel like I'm performing my job effectively.

Your upcoming projects?

My upcoming movie is with Muhashin, the director of Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham. Other films in the lineup are Tiki Taka and Athibheekara Kaamukan. I have only shot a couple of scenes for Tiki Taka; the remaining ones will be part of the upcoming schedule. The Asif Ali-starrer will undoubtedly be exceptional given Rohith's level of craftsmanship.
