Early Career Setback with YRF’s Shanoo Sharma

Actor Abhinav Shukla recently reflected on a defining yet disheartening moment early in his film career. Around 2014, just before the release of his film Roar, Abhinav was urged by friends and well-wishers to meet Shanoo Sharma, the noted casting director of Yash Raj Films (YRF), one of Bollywood’s top production houses. What followed, however, was an unexpected blunt critique that stayed with him for years.

Shanoo Sharma told Abhinav something many aspiring actors dread to hear: while he was “a good-looking guy,” he lacked the crucial “spark” to stand out. In his own words shared on Instagram, Shukla recalled, “She said, ‘You are a good looking guy but that’s it, spark is missing, you can audition but…’” This feedback, though discouraging, revealed the harsh realities of casting rooms in the film industry, where looks alone never guarantee success.

A Turning Point With Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Despite this early setback, Abhinav’s journey is a testament to perseverance. A few years later, he found himself facing a completely different scenario — auditioning for the legendary filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the ambitious film Inshallah. Though the film was eventually shelved, Abhinav experienced a heartening change in perception.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali praised Abhinav’s talent during their audition, repeatedly expressing surprise at why the actor hadn’t worked more extensively despite his obvious skills. Abhinav recalled, “SLB was all praise, all appreciative, and asked me many times, ‘How come you haven't worked so much? I saw the audition—you are super talented.’” This encounter was a significant boost for his confidence and marked a hopeful turning point professionally, even though the film never released.

Facing Industry Realities & Finding Confidence

Abhinav's contrasting experiences with YRF and Bhansali highlight the unpredictable and often challenging nature of an acting career. Being told one “lacks spark” by a top casting director could have ended his ambitions, but he chose to view this as an opportunity for growth.

He publicly related to fellow actor Isha Talwar, who recently recounted her own difficult audition, saying that insults or setbacks can sometimes lead you to people and projects that truly value your talent and time. By sharing his story openly, Abhinav encourages aspiring actors not to be discouraged by harsh judgments but to keep honing their craft.
