74-Year-Old Superstar Rajinikanth Leads 2025’s Most Anticipated Indian Film

With the conclusion of the first half of the year, IMDb India has revised its list of the most awaited Indian film of 2025. The list was originally compiled and published by the Internet Movie Database in January, when Salman Khan's Sikandar was at the top. However, the gateway has created a new list with a surprising entry at the top, six months after several major movies have already been released.
India's most awaited film of 2025
The list, according to IMDb, contains 'titles that were consistently the most popular with IMDb visitors between January 1, 2025 and July 1, 2025 among Indian movies with planned releases for the rest of the year'. The website's 'actual page views of more than 250 million monthly visitors' are what define its popularity.
Coolie by Lokesh Kanagaraj leads IMDb's updated ranking of the most awaited Indian films of 2025. The action-thriller, starring the 74-year-old Rajinikanth in the main role, is packed with celebrities, including cameo appearances by Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, and Upendra. Pooja Hegde, Shruti Haasan, Kishore, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj also play important roles in the movie. The movie's logline states that it "delves into a man's relentless quest for vengeance since youth, driven by righting past wrongs, shaping his very existence." The release date is set for August 14.
How Rajinikanth beat younger superstars
The original superstar is Rajinikanth. But it's amazing that, even at 74, he still has the box office appeal to outperform his younger rivals. All of the movies on this list are behind Coolie, including those starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR (War 2), Prabhas (The RajaSaab), and Alia Bhatt (Alpha). One of the draws is Rajinikanth's partnership with Lokesh, who produced back-to-back smash hits in Vikram and Leo. The director has now teamed up with Rajini, increasing excitement after providing Kamal Haasan and Vijay their biggest hits. The cameos are the cherry on top, with one well-known figure from three significant sectors: Aamir (Hindi), Nagarjuna (Telugu), and Upendra (Kannada). Since 2.0 (which featured Akshay Kumar), none of Rajini's films have had this pan-Indian appeal.

"This recognition from IMDb reflects the incredible excitement our fans have shown worldwide," stated Coolie director Lokesh Kanagaraj. "The reunion of legends Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj after 38 years has created magic on screen, and we hope what we've created will resonate with audiences and match their expectations."
The other films in IMDb's top ten
The delicious conflict between Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR in Ayan Mukerji's War 2, which also hits theaters on August 14, comes next. It promises to be the greatest conflict in Indian film in recent memory, following Coolie. The return of vintage Prabhas in The RajaSaab, the star's first horror comedy, ranks third.

Two romances - Shanaya Kapoor's debut, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, and Ahaan Panday's debut, Saiyaara - round up the top 5. Three other Hindi films feature in the top 10 - Baaghi 4 (#6), Son of Sardaar 2 (#7), and Alpha (#10). Mohanlal-starrer Hridayapoorvam is at number 8, while Mahavatar Narsimha (#9) sneaks in as the only animated movie in the list.
