10 Years of Baahubali: SS Rajamouli Shares How the Character of Sivagami Sparked His Vision for the Epic

On July 10, 2015, Baahubali: The Beginning debuted in theaters. The epic action movie, which SS Rajamouli co-wrote and directed, went on to become a record-breaking hit and establish a standard in Indian cinema. The movie turned into a pop culture sensation due to the titular character played by Prabhas, Rana Daggubati's portrayal of Bhallaladeva, and the mystery surrounding Kattappa's murder of Baahubali. However, do you know where SS Rajamouli's adventure with Baahubali began?
What Rajamouli had to say about creating Baahubali
Rajamouli had told Forbes in an interview in 2015 that the idea for the movie came from a single important figure in the film. “It all started with the character of Sivagami,” he said. My father told me about this individual one day around nine or ten years ago. The film begins with a very touching moment that he [Rajamouli's father V Vijayendra Prasad] told me about, in which Sivagami sacrifices herself to protect the youngster. However, there was no story or anything; he simply told me about that figure. However, after a few years, he informed me about the figure Kattappa, the devoted slave. He then told me about Bhallala Deva's personality. Then, four or five years ago, we asked, "Why not combine all these characters into a narrative?" Things then began to come together.
He continued by discussing how he creates his films using these magnificent tales, stating, "As a film enthusiast and a lover of stories, I have read biblical stories and I've seen biblical films, with the same zeal as I have read and seen my own country's stories. The majority of the time, the artist is unaware of the source of his inspiration. The information simply enters your thoughts, becomes mixed with hundreds of other tales, and by the time it exits, you have no idea where the real origin is.
Prabhas played crown prince Amarendra Baahubali and his son Mahendra in the two-part Baahubali series, which was set in the fictional kingdom of Mahishmati. The film's main villain, Bhallaladeva, was played by Rana Daggubati, who was his cousin. V Vijayendra Prasad wrote the film, which received acclaim for its size and special effects.
Upon its release, Baahubali: The Beginning made Prabhas and Rana household names by earning more than 600 crores at the box office.
