Plant Maintenance Causes May Sales Dip for Hyundai India
6 months ago | 5 Views
In May 2025, Hyundai Motor India reports total sales of 58,701 vehicles. This includes 43,861 units sold domestically and 14,840 units exported throughout the month. It's interesting to note that, during the same time period the previous year, the automaker had reported a total sales volume of 63,551 vehicles, with 49,151 units sold domestically and 14,400 units exported.
As a result, the automaker reported a 7.61% decline in domestic sales year over year. In the meanwhile, the automaker's domestic sales decreased by 10.7%, but exports increased slightly by 3%. According to Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer of HMIL, May is the month when the carmaker's Chennai manufacturing plant routinely undergoes a weeklong biannual maintenance shutdown, which has an impact on the availability of some key models.
Additionally, he emphasized that the volume of exports is still increasing steadily. With less geopolitical unpredictability and a better macroeconomic climate, Hyundai is still optimistic about a consistent rise in demand for both domestic and foreign shipments in the future.

In India, Hyundai celebrates 29 years.
The automaker said in May that it has been conducting business in India for 29 years. The manufacturer had sold more than 12.7 million vehicles throughout that time. More than 3.7 million of these items were sold in over 150 nations. Hyundai is now the leading exporter since its founding, thanks to this number.
The company is now getting ready to begin production at its new manufacturing site in Talegaon, Maharashtra, in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2025. The business recently invested ₹1,500 crore in renovating and upgrading its Chennai production facility.
Notably, Hyundai Motor India Limited, Hyundai's Indian branch, continues to be one of the top three contributors to Hyundai Motor Company's sales worldwide, accounting for 18.5% of its global volumes in 2024.
During the month, The Hyundai i10, the company's smallest offering for the Indian market, surpassed the 3.3 million unit sales milestone, which is noteworthy. According to the producer, over 2 million units have been sold in India, while 1.3 million units have been shipped to more than 140 nations. Peru, Chile, Mexico, and South Africa are among the top export markets for the i10 brand.
The i10 brand, now in its eighteenth year, has gone through three generations—i10, Grand i10, and Grand i10 NIOS—and is currently offered with three powertrain choices: 1.2 L Kappa Petrol Manual, 1.2 L Kappa Petrol AMT, and 1.2 L Bi-Fuel Kappa Petrol with CNG. In India, HMIL has sold more than 100,000 units of the i10 on average annually.
