Mercedes, Audi, and Volvo Reject Apple CarPlay Ultra Amid Control Issues: Report

According to sources, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Polestar, Renault, and other leading automakers worldwide have decided against integrating Apple's next-generation CarPlay Ultra technology into their upcoming vehicles. After Apple unveiled the new-gen in-car experience in 2022, this goes against prior expectations.

Although Apple promoted CarPlay Ultra as a futuristic advancement over its regular CarPlay system, with complete control over all in-car displays, including the instrument cluster, it seems that many European manufacturers are reluctant to hand Apple such broad control over their digital ecosystems.

A Financial Times story claims that an Apple employee was told directly by a Renault official, "Don't try to invade our own systems." This remark reflects wider worries among manufacturers that implementing CarPlay Ultra may reduce their influence over vehicle data, system architecture, and user experience.

Choose the automakers that are still participating.

Notwithstanding the opposition, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, and Porsche are still dedicated to include the CarPlay Ultra system in their lineup. But Jaguar Land Rover maintained a more cautious but open-ended approach to the system, stating that it is still weighing its options.

Other companies that were on Apple's initial 2022 list of partners, such as Ford, Nissan, and Infiniti, opted not to provide updates but did not totally rule out adoption. Additionally, according to reports, Honda and Acura are still on schedule to incorporate the new technology into their future vehicles.

The Ultra Apple CarPlay features:

Through Apple's software rather than the automaker's native design, CarPlay Ultra aims to extend Apple's user interface beyond the infotainment screen and into the instrument cluster, displaying crucial information like speed, battery/fuel levels, and climate controls.

The system is now only offered in a few cars, like the Aston Martin DBX, and it needs an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or higher, along with a wireless connection that automatically initiates the interface when the vehicle is started.

The iOS 26 upgrade from Apple, which is anticipated for September or October, will include improvements to both the regular and Ultra versions of CarPlay. Live Activities via the car's display experience, 'Tapback' emojis as responses in Messages, small calling notifications, and revised UI brackets are among the new features.

The increasing conflict between automakers and technology businesses over who owns the in-car digital experience—which is growing more important to both contemporary automobiles and user expectations—is reflected in the hesitation of some auto OEMs to implement CarPlay Ultra.
