Maruti Due to the continuing shortage of rare earth magnets, Suzuki has reduced its near-term production goals for the e-Vitara, its first electric vehicle, by two-thirds. The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara electric SUV, the manufacturer's inaugural electric vehicle, is scheduled for release in India in September 2025. Previously, the vehicle manufacturer disclosed its intention to produce 26,500 units during the first and second quarters of this fiscal year, which runs from April to September. However, due to the continuing supply chain issue, Maruti Suzuki has considerably reduced the goal to 8,200 units. This is the most recent indication of disturbance to the Indian automotive sector caused by China's export limitations on rare earth magnets.

According to a company document, Reuters has reported that Maruti Suzuki now intends to produce roughly 8,200 e-Vitara SUVs between April and September of this year, down from an initial goal of 26,500 units during that time. Nevertheless, according to the article, Maruti Suzuki intends to continue aiming for an output goal of 67,000 e-Vitaras by the end of this fiscal year in March 2026. To accomplish this, the automaker plans to increase output in the coming months. According to the company paper, which was referenced in the report, there are supply restrictions for rare earth materials that are essential for producing magnets and other parts used in various high-tech fields.

The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara is essential to the automaker's efforts to promote electric mobility in the nation. The electric vehicle was formerly presented by the automaker in its production versions, and the most recent version was in a production-ready state at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. With this debut, the carmaker will enter the Indian electric vehicle market, where some of its main competitors—Tata Motors, Hyundai, MG, and Mahindra—have previously introduced their own offerings.

Maruti Suzuki aims to be a front-runner in the Indian electric passenger vehicle market, even if it is a latecomer. The OEM is making a major investment in the e-Vitara for this. In this scenario, this setback might also harm Suzuki Motor, Maruti Suzuki's parent company, which relies heavily on India as its largest market by revenue and as a global center for electric vehicle manufacturing. Suzuki plans to export the majority of the locally produced e-Vitaras to its key markets, including Europe and Japan, in the summer of 2025.

Interestingly, this announcement comes just days after RC Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, stated that the rare earth magnet catastrophe had no effect on production.
