Mahindra Outsells Tata Motors for Second Straight Month, Driven by Thar, Scorpio N, and EV Lineup

In May 2025, Mahindra surpassed Tata Motors, its domestic competitor, in passenger car sales. According to its regulatory filings, Mahindra sold 52,431 passenger car units in the Indian market, while Tata Motors sold 41,557 units the previous month. The manufacturer of well-known models like Thar, Scorpio N, etc., Mahindra, outsold Tata for the second consecutive month. In April of this year, Mahindra sold 52,330 units, while the maker of Nexon and Punch, Tata, only sold 45,199.

With these figures, Mahindra has seen a 21% increase in passenger car sales year over year. In the same month last year, the OEM recorded 43,218 units. With 104,761 units sold this fiscal year in the year-to-date period (April–May 2025), Mahindra has also seen a 24% increase over the 84,226 units sold during the same period of the previous fiscal year. In its official statement, Mahindra goes on to say that its total sales in the passenger car sector, including domestic retail figures and exports, amounted to 54,819 units.

According to Mahindra, the increased popularity of SUVs and the optimistic outlook for battery electric vehicles have contributed to this favorable sales outcome. Among the top-selling SUVs in India produced by the manufacturer are the Thar, Thar Roxx, Scorpio N, XUV 3XO, Scorpio Classic, XUV700, Bolero Neo, and others. The automaker also sells models like the BE 6 and XEV 9e in the electric vehicle sector, which have attracted a lot of interest. Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of the Automotive Division at Mahindra and Mahindra, stated, "Thanks to continued demand for our products, we were able to deliver industry-leading growth across our internal combustion engines (ICE) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) portfolio."

With the exception of a few models, such as sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs, Mahindra's inventory is mostly made up of SUVs, which have gained popularity due to the consumer trend toward larger vehicles. According to information from Vahan, Mahindra has sold around 94,843 passenger cars in April and May of this year, establishing its position as the second-largest automaker in the Indian PV sector.
