Lamborghini Urus EV Postponed; Plug-In Hybrid to Dominate Lineup Until 2029
4 months ago | 5 Views
A strategic rethink is taking place in anticipation of Lamborghini's move to electrification. The brand has made brave statements about going electric, but customer attitude seems to be pushing it in a different direction, favoring hybrid performance over all-electric cars.
As Lamborghini rethinks its electrification strategy, the Urus EV, which was anticipated to lead the way, has been delayed.
Priority Given to Hybrid; Urus EV Timeline Postponed
The fully electric version of the Urus SUV will no longer be available when it was first planned, according to a recent confirmation from Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. In its place, the next generation Urus will be released as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), in accordance with Winkelmann's statement that the choice will "make our customers very happy." The hybrid model, in his opinion, is more in line with the expectations of Lamborghini's customers, who still place a high value on performance and emotional driving experiences, qualities that are difficult to reproduce in today's electric vehicles.
Hints point to a potential launch date for the second generation Urus in 2029, but Winkelmann didn't specify the exact day. If ever, a completely electric Urus is unlikely to be available before 2035, giving Lamborghini plenty of time to assess shifts in consumer behavior, charging infrastructure, and international laws.
It's possible that the EV launcher will also be delayed
The electrification ambitions of Lamborghini extend beyond the Urus. The Lanzador concept, which was revealed at the 2023 Monterey Car Week, served as a sneak peek at the company's fourth production vehicle and first full electric vehicle. The Lanzador, a cutting-edge 2+2 crossover with a sustainable-material interior and dual-motor all-wheel drive, was originally slated to debut by 2028.
But the schedule is now unclear. Although he is still hopeful for a launch later in the decade, Winkelmann stated that a final decision regarding its manufacturing timeline would be made in the beginning of 2026.
The EV Equation Puzzles Premium Carmakers
The supercar EV quandary is something that Lamborghini is not the only company struggling with. Customers of Ferrari, Lotus, and other brands have also resisted the idea of all-electric engines, which is understandable. A shift into a quiet, torque-rich EV poses challenges for branding and experience for firms that rely on emotional performance and their unique engine noises.
In the meantime, Lamborghini will continue to expand the Urus portfolio by introducing a PHEV variant of the Urus Performante, which combines electrification with the driving enthusiasm that defines the brand. Even if the Urus EV never hits the streets, Lamborghini is making its message clear: the future may be electric, but the soul of the raging bull will not be silenced anytime soon.
