Ford is getting ready to introduce the Bronco brand to the electric age. Soon to debut with both full electric and extended-range hybrid models is the new Ford Bronco New Energy, a newly built SUV that was co-developed with Jiangling Motors in China. This model represents a shift for the off-road-focused SUV, despite its origins in the well-known design of the Bronco family.

Based on recognizable DNA, but larger

The Bronco New Energy takes some design cues from the gasoline-powered Bronco and Bronco Sport, but it's a completely different car beneath. With a wheelbase of 2,950 mm, which is comparable to that of the full-size Bronco, it is 5,025 mm long, according to data from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

But it's one of the heaviest cars in its category, weighing in at 2,630 kg, and it's a bit heavier overall. It has dimensions that are comparable to those of electric vehicles like the Kia EV9.

An electric drivetrain with an extended range

The Bronco New Energy's all-electric version will have two motors, one for each axle. With 177 bhp from the front motor and 275 bhp from the rear, the total power output is 311 horsepower. The SUV gets its power from a 105.4kWh LFP blade battery, manufactured by BYD, and claims a maximum speed of 170 km/h. It claims a remarkable range of 650 km under the CLTC test cycle on paper. The lidar sensor located above the windshield adds to its technological credibility and strongly suggests a more sophisticated ADAS package.

The hybrid model offers greater versatility.

Ford will also introduce a plug-in hybrid model that makes use of EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) technology, along with the EV. Maruti Suzuki is also working on this. The Ford configuration is the same 177 horsepower front motor coupled with a 245 horsepower back motor, and a 1.5 liter petrol engine that only functions as a range extender, not as the wheel drive.

The hybrid model has a 43.7 kWh battery that can run solely on electricity for 220 kilometers, and when used in conjunction with the gasoline generator, it has a range of 1,220 kilometers. At 2,510 kg, this edition is little bit lighter.

Will it ever make it to India?

Although the Bronco New Energy is currently headed to China, a larger introduction has not been ruled out. The possibility of Ford's reentry into India, maybe with the next-generation Everest, is still being discussed even if the automaker has left the country.
