Delhi Enforces Fuel Ban on Old Vehicles; 80 Seized on Day One

The fuel ban on old cars in Delhi took effect on July 1. According to the officials, 80 cars that were too large were seized on the first day. This legislation prohibits fuel purchases from any gas station in the national capital for diesel cars older than 10 years and petrol cars older than 15 years. Additionally, law enforcement authorities have the authority to seize surplus vehicles that are parked in public spaces.
The gasoline restriction on older vehicles went into effect in the nation's capital Delhi on Tuesday, according to PTI, amidst increased monitoring, stringent security, and multi-agency coordination. Under the directions of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Transport Department, along with the Delhi Police and traffic officers, has implemented a comprehensive enforcement plan to ensure strict adherence to the directive that, as of July 1, all fuel stations in Delhi should not sell fuel to end-of-life (EoL) cars.
According to one Transport Department officer quoted in the study, on the first day alone, cameras recorded 98 overweight vehicles, of which 80 were impounded. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) impounded one car, the Delhi Police impounded 34, and the Transport Department seized 45.
Fuel stations in the nation's capital either shared that there was not much of an issue on the first day or did not get overage vehicles. A thorough deployment strategy, including staff from the Transport Department, Delhi Police, Traffic Police, and the MCD, has been developed by the department. The Delhi Police reported that 24 automobiles were seized from the start of the operation at 6 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to a report, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhary stated that the primary goal of this campaign is to improve Delhi's environment and lower pollution. "This is an ongoing drive, and from November 1, areas around Delhi will also implement this policy of not giving fuels to ELVs (end-of-life vehicles)," he reportedly added.
The owners of ELVs may pick up their cars from the scrap yards in 15 days, according to Chaudhary. But, he said, they will need to obtain an NOC from the Transport Department and pay a penalty in order to register the car outside of Delhi, where these vehicles are permitted. "Special Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras have been installed at the petrol pumps for the detection of ELVs. We urge the residents of Delhi to avoid using ELVs and take actions that will contribute to lowering the city's pollution," he stated.
In accordance with a 2018 Supreme Court ruling that prohibited petrol cars older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years in Delhi, CAQM's most recent directive was issued. In addition, the National Green Tribunal issued an order in 2014 that forbids the parking of automobiles older than 15 years in public areas.
