With both an all-electric and a new petrol-powered variant in the works, the future BMW M3 will have a dual-approach to powertrains. The next-generation model, which is a component of BMW's Neue Klasse architecture, is anticipated to go on sale in late 2026 or early 2027.

Later this year, the regular Neue Klasse 3 Series is expected to be unveiled, with market availability anticipated for the beginning of 2026. At least a year after that, the M3 model is anticipated to be released. Detailed performance data and official specifications for the petrol and electric M3 models are anticipated closer to the release date.

BMW Neue Klasse M3: An EV monster with over 700 horsepower

The all-electric M3 is officially stated to have an 800-volt system and over 700 horsepower, making it one of the most potent M models produced to date. BMW's new generation of performance EV technology, with an emphasis on accurate handling over raw speed, will serve as the foundation for the electric drivetrain.

The new M3 will include BMW's "Heart of Joy" control system, which was initially unveiled in the Vision Neue Klasse concept. This system integrates critical performance controls—like braking, energy regeneration, charging, drivetrain, and steering—into a single computer unit that can analyze data far more quickly than earlier systems. This, according to BMW, will result in greater responsiveness and consistency in handling, especially when turning corners.

BMW Neue Klasse M3: New inline-six engine

In addition to the electric M3, BMW will sell a gasoline-powered model with a brand-new six-cylinder engine. This internal combustion engine will be different from the existing S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six used in the current M3, according to Dr. Mike Reichelt, head of the Neue Klasse project, in an interview with Top Gear.

It is thought that the new engine might have some degree of hybridization or electrification, but the precise technical specifications have not yet been revealed. The current M3's 523 horsepower is predicted to increase, perhaps bringing it closer to the electric model.

The potential of a four-cylinder unit and other smaller engines for the M3 has been ruled out by BMW. According to company officials, such a move would not meet the performance standards for the M division's flagship sedan.
