Kunal Karan Kapoor Embarks on First Costume Drama Role with Tenali Rama

The celebrated historical drama Tenali Rama marks the latest project for Kunal Karan Kapoor, who has been acting for over ten years and is well-known for his nuanced performances. The actor is quite reflective and excited about this opportunity, as the series represents his initial foray into the realm of historical costume dramas.

Decade of varied performances

Kapoor, who gained fame with Left Right Left in 2006 and subsequently appeared in Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha (2012), Doli Armaano Ki (2015), Ziddi Dil Maane Na (2021), and most recently Udaariyaan (2024), is presently playing the character of Lakshmanappa Swaminarayana Bhattaru, a former military doctor who becomes a detective, in Tenali Rama. The actor is known to take extended pauses between projects, yet he has consistently given thorough thought to the roles he takes on.

A production insider informed Mid Day about Kapoor's thorough approach to drama, indicating that the actor never makes decisions lightly — there’s usually significant thought behind them.

Initial hesitations

The actor openly admits that he was initially reluctant to accept a period piece. He acknowledged that he has always had doubts about engaging in a costume drama. Kapoor decided to portray the character of Lakshmanappa Swaminarayana Bhattaru, an army doctor turned detective, not because he believes they are extravagant, but due to his concern that he might not be able to execute it effectively.

Still, there is personal significance to the role. Kapoor mentioned that this one is for his father, who used to watch the show.

In the actor's view, he quickly grew content with the experience, despite his early apprehensions. He developed a fondness for the entire process after arriving on the set without expectations. He is completely inexperienced with the shooting of a costume drama, so he is depending on his instincts.

Demanding preparation for the role

Kapoor then elaborates on the careful preparation that is necessary prior to each filming. The groundwork for this show is considerably more complex than for his previous shows. In this scenario, his preparation takes him more than an hour due to the costume, makeup, teeka, hair, and turban; however, in other cases, it usually takes him only five to ten minutes.

Luckily, the show has become much more memorable thanks to the vibrant energy of the cast. For Kapoor, it seems as though he has known them for a long time — particularly Krishna Bharadwaj, who portrays Tenali Rama.

Furthermore, the actor cherishes fond memories of his connection to Tenali Rama from his childhood in the '90s. At that time, very few programs were broadcast in color, but Tenali Rama was one of them. The tales are timeless, making them enjoyable for everyone, and they were incredibly popular during their era. Wearing that outfit, delivering those lines, and participating in this rich cultural tradition is a privilege for him, and the actor is thankful to be playing a role alongside Tenali.

Promising start

Kunal Karan Kapoor has already embraced the role of Tenali Rama within just eight days of shooting, assuring viewers not only entertainment but also a nostalgic revisit to stories that resonate with audiences of every age.
