WhatsApp Web users may soon be able to use voice and video call functionalities directly from their browsers. After implementing support for audio and video calls in its Windows and Mac desktop applications in 2021, WhatsApp seems to be getting ready for a comparable upgrade on its web platform.

WhatsApp Web Gets Call Buttons

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has commenced testing call buttons on its web client. At present, users need to rely on the mobile app or the desktop application to initiate voice and video calls. This new feature would enable WhatsApp users to place calls without having to install a separate application, simplifying the experience across various devices.

Messenger, another platform under Meta, has provided web-based calling for quite a while. Given the common technology shared among Meta applications, many anticipated that WhatsApp Web would eventually include calling features as well. The finding of call options in the beta version indicates progress toward that objective.

New Features for WhatsApp Web

After a recent update to the user interface that brought WhatsApp Web closer in design to the Android app, the platform is allegedly making further advancements by adding calling features. WABetaInfo remarked that this capability may facilitate calls to both individuals and groups, akin to the functionality that is already present in the desktop application.

Users attempting to make their initial call via WhatsApp Web will probably need to allow access to their microphone and webcam. Typically, browsers remember these permissions unless users delete cookies and site data. Alternatively, users might choose to grant access each time they visit the site.

Incorporating calling functionality into WhatsApp Web could streamline the process for users utilizing new or shared computers, thereby removing the need for extra installations. It offers a faster method for communication through calls while using only the web browser.

The timeline for the complete rollout of voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web is still unclear. Nevertheless, the existence of the feature in beta testing implies that an official release may be on the horizon.

This change comes after WhatsApp's recent launch of an Advanced Chat Privacy feature, which aims to improve user security by preventing the export of chats without user consent.
