UWB Integration to Supercharge Android’s Find My Device, Quadrupling Speed
18 days ago | 5 Views
Google is preparing to roll out a major update to its Android Find My Device network, which is expected to provide quicker and more accurate tracking. As per the company, the network is now capable of finding lost items four times faster than when it was initially launched. This enhancement comes on the heels of last year's notable update that improved third-party tracker compatibility and offline location functionality, and it seems that another significant feature is on the way.
UWB Technology Coming Soon
Android product manager Angela Hsiao disclosed in a conversation with The Verge that ultra-wideband (UWB) technology will be integrated into Find My Device soon. UWB will enable users to track misplaced devices with improved precision, similar to how Apple's ecosystem operates with AirTags. With UWB integration, users will be able to determine the precise location of a device, such as locating it behind a couch instead of just identifying its presence in a room. At present, only the Moto Tag tracker utilizes UWB on the Android network, but numerous Android smartphones, including the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 8 Pro, already incorporate the technology.
Google I/O
Recent code updates within Find My Device indicated the forthcoming inclusion of UWB, suggesting that the feature's launch is on the horizon. The feature might potentially be showcased during Google I/O 2025, which is set to occur on May 20. Google has yet to verify the precise date for the UWB rollout, but it appears that it will be released shortly.
According to the reports by The Verge also implies that the Find My Device network is already matching Apple's tracking system in areas with dense gadget activity. Nevertheless, in more isolated regions, the precision and coverage of tracking are less dependable, with outcomes fluctuating based on the type of tracker and location. While Google has not yet released its own variant of the Apple AirTags, speculation suggests that such a product could be under development.
Hsiao pointed out that Google's internal assessments reveal that the network is now capable of locating items approximately four times quicker than previously, owing to the enhancements made in the 2024 update. Although it isn't yet equivalent to Apple's system, Google is persistently working to improve the network's efficiency. To utilize UWB effectively, users must have a compatible phone, and many of the newest Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Google Pixel 9 Pro, currently support the technology.
