9 days ago | 5 Views
The prospects for automotive displays made significant progress at the ongoing SID Display Week 2025 in San Jose, California, where LG introduced an innovative stretchable display specifically crafted for the automotive sector. This novel display, presented under the theme "Driving the Future," signifies a noteworthy improvement in our engagement with screens within vehicles, merging cutting-edge technology with practical application.
A Display That Transforms with a Touch
LG's stretchable automotive display, installed on the vehicle's central fascia, can expand by as much as 50 percent without sacrificing its resolution or colour fidelity. It retains 100 ppi and full RGB quality, making it both expansive and immersive. What distinguishes it from conventional displays is its capability to transition from a flat surface to a tactile interface featuring physical buttons. This versatility enables users to effortlessly shift from a minimalist design to one that offers tangible usability with the ease of physical controls.
This innovative display technology from LG may remove the necessity for separate screens and buttons in vehicles, integrating both components into a singular, dynamic unit. With a mere touch, the display changes, allowing users to engage with it more conveniently, even while driving.
More Features for Safety and Entertainment
In addition to this flexible display, LG is also developing a privacy mode feature, enabling front passengers to view videos or utilize apps without causing a distraction to the driver. This mode promotes safety by keeping content away from the driver’s line of sight.
LG also presented a 57-inch Pillar-to-Pillar OLED screen, the largest of its type, which spans the entire dashboard. The company confirmed it has already delivered a 40-inch version of this display to automotive manufacturers. Moreover, LG is creating an 18-inch Slidable OLED display for entertainment in the rear seats, which retracts into the ceiling when not in operation, and is engineered to function under extreme temperature ranges from -40 degrees Celsius to 85 degrees Celsius. The latest concepts indicate a future in which displays fulfill both aesthetic and practical roles within vehicles.
