Rohit’s Captaincy Future in Question? Agarkar Says Gill Must Earn It in England

With the Indian Test team moving on from Rohit Sharma as the head of the unit, the question arises as to what the future plans are for the national team. With the future of Indian Test captaincy still uncertain, former chief selector MSK Prasad shared his thoughts on the players he considers as top candidates for the position.
When asked about the possibility of Jasprit Bumrah taking on the leadership of the national team, Prasad supported the Indian pacer. “Why not, man? Why not? Since he’s fit now, why not? ” Prasad stated in an interview with India Today.
Despite his recent role as vice-captain, Bumrah is reportedly not expected to be the Test captain due to concerns that he may not be available for every match as India aims to manage his workload in Test cricket. With a five-match series in England approaching this summer, Prasad proposed three names that the team would be evaluating for the role.
“You have three choices right now: Bumrah, Shubman Gill, and KL Rahul,” Prasad mentioned. “These are the three options. If you’re looking at Bumrah, he will obviously play both cycles—this one and the next—so there’s nothing wrong. And whatever opportunities he’s had to lead, he’s done extremely well. ”
Bumrah captained two Test matches during India’s tour of Australia in 2024-25, including the win at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Nevertheless, as the star bowler recuperates from a back injury sustained on that tour, India will be cautious with his fitness.
Prasad suggests vice-captaincy for Gill.
As Shubman Gill is regarded as a leading contender for the position due to his youth and potential longevity in the team, Prasad still emphasized that the batter should be allowed time to refine his game, especially in foreign conditions. Prasad argued that Gill should concentrate on his batting during this England series before he faces the additional responsibility of captaincy.
“I think I’m okay with either of them (Gill or Bumrah). They’re considering both,” said Prasad. “I think to start off with a series like England, we don’t want anyone getting under pressure. See, I think Shubman needs one good series in England or New Zealand so he can focus on his batting. ”
Prasad proposed that Bumrah should lead the team until Gill is ready to assume the role, with Gill currently serving as vice-captain of the ODI team: “So, I think Bumrah is a fantastic leader. There’s no second thought about that. You can start with Bumrah and make Shubman vice-captain. ”
India’s tour of England begins at Headingley in Leeds on June 20, with the squad anticipated to be announced before the IPL 2025 final, which will likely include the decision on captaincy for the tour.
