No Indians in ICC's ODI Team of the Year: Players from Just Four Countries Featured

No Indian cricketer featured in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2024, as India played only three ODIs during the year, all against Sri Lanka, with disappointing results—two losses and a tie. Despite being active in other formats, India’s absence from the lineup reflects their underwhelming performance in ODIs.

The ODI Team of the Year was led by Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka, who shone with 605 runs in 16 matches at an average of 50.02, establishing himself as a dependable middle-order batter. He was joined by teammates Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (also the wicketkeeper), and Wanindu Hasaranga, making Sri Lanka the most represented team in the XI. Ironically, despite this strong individual representation, Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s young star Saim Ayub earned his spot in the lineup with a remarkable 515 runs in just nine matches, including three centuries. The team also featured Pakistan’s pace duo, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, whose outstanding performances secured their places. Afghanistan contributed three players—Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Azmatullah Omarzai, and emerging spinner AM Ghazanfar—showcasing their rising prominence in international cricket. West Indies’ Sherfane Rutherford was the lone representative from his nation.

Only 4 nations, 2 not in Champions Trophy

Interestingly, the ICC ODI Team of the Year features players from only four countries, two of which—Sri Lanka and the West Indies—failed to qualify for the eight-team ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Despite their absence from the tournament, Sri Lanka dominates the Team of the Year with four players, while the West Indies have a single representative in Sherfane Rutherford.

The Champions Trophy will include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan from the subcontinent, along with Australia, New Zealand, England, and South Africa. Due to political constraints, India’s matches will be played in Dubai, while the rest of the tournament, including matches involving other teams, will take place in Pakistan. The competition is set to commence on February 19.
