The escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan have caused the largest league tournament to be stopped for only the second time. The IPL has experienced various challenges over the years. It was relocated from India in 2009 due to general elections, and then again partially in 2014. Nonetheless, it has taken something truly significant to cause the IPL to come to a halt.

Now that the tournament has been suspended, with no clarity regarding its continuation, let’s reflect on the year 2021, when, for the first time in its history, the Indian Premier League was interrupted in the middle. The cause was the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was halted in May 2021, owing to several bio-bubble breaches and rising Covid-19 cases among players and staff. It resumed in September 2021 in the United Arab Emirates.

What will happen to IPL 2025 now that it’s been suspended

The IPL, a 10-team tournament showcasing elite cricket talent from across the world, is the sport's richest league. It began on March 22 and is set to conclude with a grand final on May 25 at Kolkata's Eden Gardens, usually attracting a large global television audience. Among the international stars are Australians Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, and Mitch Marsh, with former captain Ricky Ponting coaching the Punjab Kings.

Lucknow Super Giants were scheduled to compete against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday. However, worries regarding player safety have led to significant choices being made. Cricket Australia announced on Friday, prior to any suspension news, "We are closely monitoring the situation in Pakistan and India and maintaining communication with our players and support staff in the region. " Meanwhile, Pakistan’s T20 league has already moved its remaining matches to the United Arab Emirates to ensure the safety of the players.
