The Angel Maker was released in 2023, and garnered positive responses. Danish actress Julie R Ølgaard made her directorial debut with her crime-thriller film. The story centres around a detective, who is struggling with postpartum depression and gets entangled in a disturbing case of serial killings. The Angel Maker was previously released on Netflix and remained the no.1 English film for 2 consecutive weeks last year. Here's why you must revisit the psychological crime-thriller on VROTT and OTTplay Premium

The Angel Maker story

The story begins with cybercrime detective Laura, who is on sick leave, and visiting a psychiatrist for her own mental health problems. She soon gets a call from her senior to join in solving a serial killings case. Despite refusing initially, Laura finds the case quite intriguing and returns to dig up the history of these brutal murders. Julie R Ølgaard is seen playing the role of Laura. It also features Roland Møller, Christopher Læssø and Stine Stengade in the leads.

The trailer begins with a masked man dragging a young girl into the darkness by her legs, and the girl is screaming the best she can. Later the masked man kills her by suffocating her with a plastic bag around her face. Shortly after, someone sends the brutal killing video to Laura. Within a few days of the incident, numerous murders start occurring. Notably, each victim had undergone an abortion.

Of course, there's no trace of the murderer in the crime scenes. The police have been trying their best to find out any clues from there. The shocking part is the killer left some hints, which says Creator of Angels. In order to stop the heinous killer, Laura returns to work. Little does she know that she would have to confront her own past while solving the case.

The Angel Maker - What is the focal point?

From the story and the trailer, we got to know that the murderer despises those who kill unborn babies. Despite Denmark being one of the first Western European countries to legalise abortion, it is still a sensitive issue. Time restrictions, the age for abortion consent, without parental consent - these are still some of the most debated topics in Denmark. For the unversed, this topic is not fictional, rather it's purely based on the reality Denmark is currently facing.

Hence, it seems like The Angel Maker is not made to focus on the murders and violence, rather on the abortion topic. However, the filmmakers chose a rather brutal method to attract the audiences. The young victims are brutally beaten, their hands cut off and abdomens are deliberately sliced from the lower part of their bodies by using a wire hook (a tool for abortions).

The Angel Maker wholly addresses the vulnerability and fragility of women. The film deals with the topic where an adult human being suffers barbaric atrocities because of someone who is not even born yet.
