Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay's old blockbuster, Ghilli , continues to enjoy a dream run at the box office following its re-release last week. The film is shattering box office records for a movie that is about 20 years old.

According to Cinetrak, Ghilli has collected Rs 10 crore from ticket sales in India alone within four days of its re-release. It has earned more than Rs 3 crore from international territories, bringing in a total of Rs 13 crore so far.

The scale of Ghilli's theatrical collection has surprised the trade, as its performance has been better than most of the new Tamil movies released this year so far. The film has earned more than Rs 9 crore in Tamil Nadu alone, bringing much-needed relief to theatres in the state.

Many Tamil movies, including Sivakarthikeyan's Ayalaan and Dhanush's Captain Miller, were disappointed at the box office. However, audiences seem to have no qualms about visiting theatres to watch a two-decade-old movie.

Ghilli's streaming and box office records

What's surprising is that Ghilli is also available for streaming. The film is streaming on SunNXT, Aha Tamil, and OTTplay Premium.

And yet, Ghilli is performing surprisingly well at the box office. Ghilli holds the distinction of being only the fourth film to have sold more than Rs 10 crore worth of tickets in India alone, after Titanic 3D (2012), Sholay 3D (2013), and Avatar (2023).

Theatres are falling back on old blockbusters to attract audiences, owing to the lack of exciting new movies in Tamil. All major releases have been postponed due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Of all the re-releases in the history of Tamil cinema, Ghilli's collection has set a new benchmark.

Amid the blockbuster response for Ghilli, there is also growing clamour for the re-release of Ajith Kumar's 2011 film, Mankatha, which is also streaming on SunNXT and OTTplay Premium .
