Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a name that has dominated the mainstream headlines for the past couple of weeks as he made his OTT debut with a show as massive as Heeramandi on Netflix. He has been leading the streaming charts, the online chatter has been all about his show, and the world is hooked on the grandeur, music, acting performances, and visuals of a story that the filmmaker has been wanting to tell for over a decade. But while Heeramandi will continue to bring in an audience and the show is still topping the streaming charts, Bhansali already has his next project announced, and it is a theatrical film with Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal in the center of it all titled, Love & War. It turns out the filmmaker has now decided to open up about the movie that has left the fans anticipating it for a while now.

For the uninitiated, Love & War will have Bhatt and Kapoor in an SLB film for the second time and will mark Vicky Kaushal’s entry into his universe. The filmmaker announced the movie months ago and fans have been waiting to know what exactly he has in store for them with his new story. Bhansali has now finally opened up about the movie and called it a triangular love story that hasn't been made in Hindi cinema for a while now. Calling it a film away from the period set-up of his past few movies, SLB has given us a hint of what we should expect. In a recent conversation with Variety, when asked about the next film, Love & War, Sanjay Leela Bhansali revealed that this is in contrast to everything he has done in the past few projects. The filmmaker said, “It’s a love story that I’m making after a long time. A slightly contemporary work, different from the dances, pillars, architecture, drapes, curtains, and jewellery [of Heeramandi]. It’s a new language, milieu, and ambiance for me.”

He added, “I needed [it] very much to excite me as a filmmaker to do something new, to speak of a different period, a different set of characters and new circumstances.” Sanjay Leela Bhansali further spoke about working with Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal. “It’s nice to work with this wonderful cast of Ranbir, Vicky, and Alia. It’ll be nice to see how their chemistry works. And [it is] a triangular love story, which has not come in Hindi cinema for a long time. So let’s see how it all shapes up,” Bhansali added.

Love & War is a love triangle, a genre that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has mastered, and brings his two muses, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, and his new muse, Vicky Kaushal, together. The movie is set against the backdrop of a war and will have a very contemporary touch to it. Reports earlier had said that Bhansali aspires to pay homage to the iconic film Sangam, which was directed by Raj Kapoor.
