IIn Kannada cinema, actor Rishi is often associated with either Operation Alamelamma or Kavaludaari, with Kavaludaari getting more attention thanks to being directed by Hemanth M Rao. Since then, Rishi has starred in movies like Nodi Swamy Ivanu Irode Heege and Ramana Avatara as the lead, but they haven't quite made the splash he was aiming for. Does it bother Rishi that, after five years, people still mainly recognize him for Kavaludaari?

Rishi: Democracy just doesn't cut it in the film industry

Every project we take on has good intentions behind it. No film crew sets out to create a bad movie. The goal is always to produce something great, but filmmaking is a team effort with a lot of people involved, and in this field, democracy doesn’t always play out as it should. Sometimes it does, like in Daaku Maharaj, where everyone has the freedom to contribute, and the director just focuses on capturing the best moments, Rishi shares in a chat with Kairam Vaashi for Rudhra Garuda Purana.

Is it a case of too many cooks in the kitchen? Rishi thinks that’s somewhat accurate. He gives an example of a filmmaker wanting to shoot a scene at a train station, but the cinematographer might reject that idea due to lighting issues. While changing the location might seem minor, it can have a bigger impact, he explains. “It won’t hit the right notes,” he says, discussing why his film choices since Kavaludaari haven’t resonated as well.

Rishi: I'll start to stress when I can’t feel what the audience is into anymore

Rishi acknowledges that projects that don’t perform well commercially can be a disappointment. However, he doesn’t let those outcomes get him down. His main goal has always been to entertain people or make them think. If he feels that’s not happening, he talks it over with the filmmaker, who can choose to take his advice or not. “At this point, I understand why some things haven’t clicked. I’ll only start to worry if I ever feel like I’m picking the wrong projects or if I lose connection with what the audience wants,” he shares.
