Kannada actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty has been very busy with acting commitments across Kannanda and Malayalam projects that it maybe a while before he returns to the director’s chair. During the release of Toby, which Raj had written but got his long-time associate Basil AL Chalakkal to direct, he had said that he would produce two films, a comedy and a love story, both of which he would be writing, and that he would return to direction only after that. His focus, he had said, was going to be on his production house, but, as it turned out, he got busy as an actor, including films like 45 and Turbo. According to the latest, he is also a part of Duniya Vijay’s next, so it may be a while before Raj turns to direction again.

Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye

Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye is actress Ramya’s debut home production and starred Raj and Siri Ravikumar in the lead. The film was set in a hospice for the terminally ill, where Raj comes to spend his last days. There, he meets the hospice counsellor, and in only a few days, they develop a bond that changes her life irrevocably.

Toby

Toby was Raj’s first release since Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana, and although he had not directed it, the film was based on a script he had developed based on a short story. Raj played a speech-impaired man, with the central focus being his relationship with his adopted daughter Jenny (Chaithra J Achar). At its core, the film was about a father-daughter bond, but it was projected as a bigger commercial film than GGVV, which worked adversely for it at the box office. While the team has not openly spoken about its theatrical performance, Toby is said to have had a better reception in its Malayalam-dubbed version.

Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana

Raj and Rishab Shetty played the leads, Shiva and Hari, in a gangster tale set in Mangaladevi. Gopalkrishna Deshpande was the cop sent to dismantle their reign in the region and how he goes about it is what the film is about.

Ondu Motteya Kathe

This was Raj’s first directorial and lead role and had him in a comedy about the travails of a bald man – a Kannada professor, as he tries to find a suitable bride. The film was subsequently remade in Hindi and Malayalam.
