Malayalam filmmaker Jithu Madhavan had no qualms admitting that his latest movie, Aavesham, bears shades of director Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda. Jithu noted that Jigarthanda delved into such meticulous detailing that it became a monumental task for filmmakers in the comedy gangster genre to avoid referencing the 2014 Tamil blockbuster.

"Jigarthanda is a benchmark film in the gangster comedy genre. You cannot make another film without its influence. Because they have made such a detailed gangster film. I have tried my best to avoid any resemblance in Aavesham," Jithu said in a recent interview.

Jigarthanda, which translates to "cold-hearted," played an instrumental role in solidifying Karthik Subbaraj's reputation as a force to reckon with in the Tamil film industry. The film follows an aspiring filmmaker who sets out to make a gritty gangster movie but gets entangled in the real-life underworld. It masterfully blends dark humour with moments of genuine tension, making it a gripping watch.

Aavesham vs Jigarthanda

After watching Aavesham, many viewers have noticed similarities with Jigarthanda. The Malayalam movie, starring Fahadh Faasil, narrates the tale of an eccentric gangster who emotionally attaches himself to three misguided teenagers. The boys are drawn to Fahadh's character, Ranga, because of his resources. They believe that befriending Ranga will shield them from bullying at college. However, they are ill-prepared to handle the repercussions of their impulsive decision. On the other hand, Ranga consider them as his family and seeks to form a genuine emotional connection.

The predicament of the boys in Aavesham mirrors that of Siddharth's character, Karthik, in Jigarthanda. He befriends a notorious gangster to gather material for his movie but finds himself embroiled in deeper trouble than anticipated.

Aavesham hit cinemas earlier this month and stormed the box office in Kerala. The film is also performing well in Tamil Nadu, having already amassed over Rs 100 crore from worldwide ticket sales.
