Maaman Film Review
Director: Prashanth Pandiyaraj
Starring: Soori, Aishwarya Lekshmi
Rating: ★★

Over the past several years, comedian Soori has demonstrated his skill as a great actor in movies like Viduthalai and Garudan. Soori wrote and Prashanth Pandiyaraj directed the family drama Maaman, which attempts to portray a different side of the Tamil actor to his supporters and the public. The transition from comedian to all-out hero is difficult since the performer must be able to play the lead role in an intriguing plot with ease.

Maaman: What happened?

Soori, playing Uncle Inba, is seen by Maaman (Uncle) in his nephew Nilan, also known as Laddu (Prateesh Sivan). Girija (Swasika), Inba's married sister, has been praying for a kid for years, and after a decade, she is fortunate to have Nilan, whom the whole family adores. Despite having a father, Laddu grows close to Inba, and the uncle becomes a beloved father figure in Laddu's life. Inba falls in love with Dr. Rekha (Aishwarya Lekshmi), a gynecologist. Due to Laddu's inability to live without his uncle, particularly at night, issues begin to arise when the couple gets married. Due to Laddu, family tension increases and Rekha and Inba begin to have problems. How are these family issues settled?

What Maaman misses

At the center of this tale is a kid, his uncle, and the somewhat unhealthy connection they have that has an impact on many households. The therapy and plot are far less appealing, despite the fact that Soori's decision to make this the core is praiseworthy. For example, rather than promoting the behaviors that a married woman, particularly in rural areas, goes through when she is childless, the film could have portrayed them as regressive. By ignoring his wife, Inba, who is always there for everyone in his family, perpetuates the patriarchal mentality that modern society is battling. The mother interrupts Rekha's recommendation that Laddu see a therapist, saying that her kid is not insane. In the guise of family sentiment, the tale exaggerates these unseemly societal stereotypes and attitudes, which is a disappointment.

The child, Laddu, is excessively pampered because he was born late in his parents' lives, but the fact that nobody takes the time to discipline him as he grows up demonstrates the lack of parenting skills, even though his mother is a teacher! People with unscientific convictions and lower levels of education make fun of Rekha, who works as a doctor. As a result, the adults in this family are the ones who have significant problems that need to be resolved, not the youngster..

It doesn't really work to have Maaman rush through a range of subjects around a family while focusing on an uncle-nephew relationship and injecting a lot of emotion and drama. For example, the child's lack of a relationship with his father and his need for counseling were both excellent topics to discuss.

The film could have been transformed into a lighthearted comedy with the child's antics at play, or the complexity of that relationship should have been thoroughly examined.

In terms of performances, Soori, Aishwarya Lekhmi, Swasika, and Prateesh Sivan have all done an outstanding job. Bala Saravanan provides comic relief, while Raj Kiran is excellent as the 'Lion' and the old man in the family. With Maaman, music director Hesham Abdul Wahab, who has produced some outstanding masterpieces in Malayalam and Telugu cinema, makes his Tamil film debut. Unfortunately, the film's music is mediocre and unremarkable.

This Soori Tamil drama is, on the whole, lackluster and overly dependent on family feelings.
