Fateh Movie Review: Sonu Sood Transforms into an Action Hero in His Directorial Debut

Animal, Marco, Kill… and now Fateh. They’re all siblings, bound by blood. It makes you think about how the film industry has evolved to a point where violence is the main attraction, and the spotlight is on finding new ways to depict death on screen.

Sonu Sood’s first time directing is a wild ride filled with blood and guts, pretending to tackle cyber crime. But honestly, it doesn’t really hit the mark.

What’s Fateh all about?

Sonu Sood’s latest movie dives into the world of fake loan apps and the chaos that follows, where people face harassment over high-interest repayments. Sood takes on the role of Fateh Singh, a former secret agent turned contract killer. When a girl from his Punjab village goes missing, he heads to Delhi to track her down. What he finds instead is that she’s caught up in a dangerous international scam run by Raza (Naseeruddin Shah). The journey of how he attempts to save her is what drives the rest of the film.

The story kicks off strong but quickly loses its direction. Honestly, you could swap out the cybercrime theme for just about any other issue, and it wouldn’t change much. The main focus seems to be on delivering slick action scenes, complete with blood splatter every few minutes. From drilling into someone’s mouth to gouging out eyes, you get the idea. The climax even feels like it borrows heavily from Ranbir Kapoor’s character in Animal.

Where Fateh stumbles

Sood does a decent job directing, but the screenplay he co-wrote with Ankur Pannu feels pretty standard for action flicks. After a while, the slick action loses its wow factor, and the digital scam subplot comes off as amateurish. Fateh tries to give the impression that it’s all about raising awareness, but honestly, I didn’t learn anything new from it.

Jacqueliene Fernandez plays an ethical hacker, but her role is pretty limited to screaming, crying, or waiting for someone to rescue her. Shah feels underutilized; it seems like his scenes were shot in a day since all he does is sit around and smirk at computer screens.

Sood is definitely the backbone of this film. Even with some rough patches, he keeps you engaged. He’s great with heavy action, and you can tell they aimed for an international vibe. The music fits well, especially the title track sung by Arijit Singh.

While Fateh doesn’t really break any new ground in the action genre, its international flair—particularly in the action scenes—might just win over some viewers.
