Actor-filmmaker Prakash Raj was overwhelmed by the reception that the re-release of his movie Ghilli has been receiving from fans worldwide. He expressed surprise and deep gratitude to fans for showering their unconditional love on the film and his performance in it.

"They (fans) enjoy it a lot when Muthupandi says 'I love you.' Vijay sir, Trisha, and I make a great combination in this film," Prakash Raj told the media.

Prakash Raj's beloved performance in Ghilli

Ghilli is the Tamil remake of the Telugu blockbuster Okkadu. The filmmakers roped in Prakash Raj to reprise the main antagonist he portrayed in Okkadu. By some margin, Prakash Raj's performance as Muthupandi in Ghilli outshined his performance as Obul Reddy in Okkadu.

Even though Muthupandi is a villain and a ruthless killer who relentlessly harasses Trisha's Dhanalakshmi, Prakash Raj's prolific performance made the character the most beloved villain in the history of Tamil cinema.

Instead of caricaturing Muthupandi as a typical mindless villain, Prakash Raj manages to humanize the character by mining his undying love for Dhanalakshmi. While there is no justification for Muthupandi's excessive use of violence and his sheer disregard for consent, we can't help but enjoy Muthupandi's diabolic antics, thanks to Prakash Raj's committed performance.

"What I like is they (fans) also equally love Trisha's and my performance as a father-daughter in Abhiyum Naanum. I'm indebted to people's love even after so many years and repeated broadcasts on television," Prakash Raj added.

Ghilli on streaming

While in Ghilli Prakash Raj essayed the role of Trisha's stalker and tormentor, in Abhiyum Naanum he played Trisha's doting father. The 2008 feel-good movie that revolved around a father-daughter relationship was a huge commercial and critical hit back in the day.

In the meantime, Ghilli, starring Thalapathy Vijay, is setting a new benchmark for re-release movies in terms of box office collections. The film opened last Saturday to packed houses and has been drawing a large number of audiences to theatres. The film's re-release has fetched about Rs 10 crore in India alone, with the film earning more than Rs 9 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office.

Ghilli is also available for streaming on SunNXT, Aha Tamil, and OTTplay Premium .
