A British MP has claimed that "masked Khalistani terrorists" intimidated his constituents in north-west London when they stormed a screening of Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency. Speaking in Parliament, Conservative MP Bob Blackman called on the UK Home Secretary to take action regarding the situation.
Urgent matter hits the British Parliament
Bob Blackman, an Opposition MP, shared in the House of Commons that similar disruptions of the "very controversial" film have occurred in places like Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Slough, Staines, and Manchester. This has led the Vue and Cineworld cinema chains to pull the film from numerous theaters across the UK.
“On Sunday, a lot of my constituents showed up and paid for a screening of the film Emergency at the Harrow Vue cinema. About 30 or 40 minutes into the movie, masked Khalistani terrorists stormed in, threatened the audience, and forced the screening to stop,” Blackman explained in Parliament.
“The film is indeed controversial, and I’m not here to comment on its quality or content, but I stand up for my constituents and others’ rights to watch it and form their own opinions. It discusses the time when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India,” he added.
The MP pointed out that some people in the UK view it as an "anti-Sikh film," but he emphasized that his constituents should be able to make their own judgments without being "intimidated by thugs who want to disrupt the democratic right to watch public films."
"Can we get a statement from the Home Secretary (Yvette Cooper) next week about what will be done to ensure that those who want to see these films, which have been approved by censors, can do so peacefully? I fully support the right to protest outside cinemas, but not to interrupt screenings,” he concluded.
Backing from the House Leader
Lucy Powell, the Leader of the Commons, spoke for the Labour Party government, acknowledging that Blackman brought up a "crucial issue regarding the balance between free speech and the right to protest peacefully."
"People should be able to enjoy their activities without interference, whether it's watching a movie that's been approved by the censors and others involved in those decisions. I’ll make sure he and everyone in the House receive an update on these significant points he’s raised," Powell stated.
The debate over the emergency situation in the UK
British Sikh groups have been staging protests against the film ‘Emergency’, causing disruptions at various cinemas across the UK since it hit theaters last Friday. The Sikh Press Association took to social media to express that the film is perceived as “anti-Sikh,” leading to the cancellation of screenings in places like Birmingham and Wolverhampton in the West Midlands.
Additionally, the community organization Insight UK shared a video on its X platform that captured masked protesters interrupting a screening in London. The film, directed by Ranaut, features her in the role of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
About Emergency
Kangana Ranaut's latest project, Emergency, is a political thriller that dives into Indira Gandhi's time as India's Prime Minister, with a spotlight on the 1975 Emergency period. The film stirred up some controversy when certain Sikh groups claimed it was ‘anti-Sikh,’ a charge that Kangana has firmly rejected. It's worth noting that Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards in 1984.
The cast includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik. After facing multiple delays, the film finally hit theaters last week.
