Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga is known to be very defensive when it comes to his films, with a reputation for not responding well to criticism. Even seasoned filmmakers think twice before sharing their thoughts on his work.

Recently, filmmaker Gautham Menon was asked to comment on Sandeep's blockbuster movie Animal. The film, released last year, grossed over Rs 900 crore from theatrical collections alone, earning the distinction of being one of the most controversial films in Indian cinema history.

Ranbir's character, Ranvijay Singh, in Animal, stood in stark contrast to the heroes of Gautham Menon's movies. While Gautham's protagonists are typically gentle and chivalrous towards women despite their propensity for violence, the hero of Animal lacks such traits, being extremely dominating, self-centred, and indifferent to others' feelings.

Gautham Menon didn't like Animal but...

Gautham disclosed that he had reservations about the film's narrative and characterization but chose not to elaborate, fearing it would spark unwanted debates. "If I say something about Animal, Sandeep Vanga's team will question my authority. They might ask, 'Who am I? Am I a big shot?' And that could lead to further complications. So I'm not sure if I should delve into it," Gautham remarked.

Despite his reservations, Gautham admitted to watching the film with audiences who reacted to Animal akin to watching a horror movie, often peering between their fingers. He even confessed to leaving the theatre after the first half initially, returning five days later to watch the remainder. "Sandeep will probably scold me, but Ranbir Kapoor's performance was outstanding. (Despite all the issues in the movie) His acting was extraordinary, and I thoroughly enjoyed it," Gautham added.

Contrary to Gautham's assumptions, Sandeep does acknowledge Gautham's stature. In a recent interview, Sandeep expressed admiration for Gautham and his films. "I like Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, and I love all of Gautham Menon's films," Sandeep remarked.
