In an industry often criticized for superficial relationships, the deep bond between 'Superstar' Rajinikanth and the multi-talented K. Bhagyaraj stands out as a genuine friendship that has endured the test of time and fame. Rajinikanth recently shared a moving personal account, revealing how Bhagyaraj became his sole savior during a life-threatening encounter decades ago.

The superstar was speaking at a commemorative event in Chennai celebrating Bhagyaraj’s phenomenal 50-year journey in cinema, where he offered high praise for his long-time friend's versatility.

The Three Kings of 1970s Tamil Cinema

Rajinikanth used the occasion to laud Bhagyaraj's unique contributions to Tamil cinema, positioning him alongside two other legends who emerged in the 1970s: composer Ilaiyaraaja and filmmaker Bharathiraja.

He observed that while Ilaiyaraaja became the undisputed master of film music and Bharathiraja dominated the directorial landscape, Bhagyaraj stood alone in his ability to master nearly every major creative role. Rajinikanth noted that Bhagyaraj was the only one of the trio to simultaneously demonstrate unparalleled prowess in writing, directing, acting, and composing music. Furthermore, he specifically praised the screenwriter-director for his progressive approach to filmmaking, citing his consistent crafting of strong and well-rounded female characters in his movies.

The Chilling Ordeal of 1995

Taking a trip down memory lane, an emotional Rajinikanth recounted a harrowing incident from the mid-1990s where Bhagyaraj's timely intervention proved life-saving. The event stemmed from a tribute function held in Chennai in 1995 for the late legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan.

During the event, Rajinikanth confessed that he had made certain remarks in an "emotional and passionate manner" that were not well-received by a segment of the public. These controversial comments soon triggered protests and widespread public backlash against the superstar. One day, while he was traveling in a jeep, the situation escalated dramatically. An unruly, angered crowd cornered his vehicle and began pelting stones. Describing the terrifying moment, Rajinikanth told the audience, as quoted by Times of India, "Everybody had gone away. I did not know where to run."

 Bhagyaraj’s Decisive Action

It was at this critical juncture that Bhagyaraj stepped in with decisive authority. Rajinikanth recalled that his friend swiftly took the loitering police personnel present at the scene to task. Bhagyaraj demanded that the officers immediately escort the superstar back to his home safely. It was only after this stern admonition and demand for accountability that the police swung into action, providing the necessary protection to ensure Rajinikanth's journey home was secured.

"I can never forget that day," an emotional Rajinikanth concluded. "He didn't just save me from a mob; he showed what it truly means to stand up for another human being." This heartfelt recollection not only highlighted the dangers faced by celebrities but also celebrated the enduring power of true friendship in the cutthroat world of cinema.
