In December of the previous year, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap disclosed in an interview his intentions to move to South India. Recently, in a discussion with The Hindu, he confirmed that he has indeed "left Mumbai" and characterized Bollywood as "toxic."

Anurag calls Hindi film industry 'toxic'

According to a source, Anurag is likely to have settled in Bangalore. The filmmaker, who has previously voiced his dissatisfaction with the Hindi film industry, reiterated his views, describing it as "toxic." He stated, "I wish to distance myself from film professionals. The industry has become excessively toxic. Everyone is pursuing unrealistic goals, aiming to create the next ₹500 or ₹800 crore film. The creative environment has vanished."

Earlier, Anurag expressed to The Hollywood Reporter India that he felt "disgusted" and "disappointed" with the Hindi film industry, prompting his decision to relocate to South India in search of a more "stimulating" atmosphere. He remarked, "I envy them (South filmmakers). It has become challenging for me to experiment now. It incurs costs that lead my producers to focus on profits. They ask, ‘Where are my margins? I’m losing money.’ I respond, ‘If you don’t want to make this movie, then don’t.’ But I find myself unable to do so. From the outset, the focus shifts to ‘how do we sell it?’ This drains the joy from filmmaking. That is why I intend to leave. I will be moving out of Mumbai next year."

Anurag Kashyap's upcoming projects

Currently, the filmmaker is engaged in promoting the Malayalam film Footage, which he presents. Directed by Saiju Sreedharan, the film features Manju Warrier alongside Vishak Nair and Gayathri Ashok in prominent roles. Released in August of last year, its Hindi version is scheduled for release on March 7, 2025.

Anurag is set to portray a courageous police officer in the forthcoming film Dacoit. This movie is being filmed concurrently in both Hindi and Telugu, with Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur taking on the leading roles. The release date for the film has not yet been disclosed.
