In response to the appeal by our prime minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, millions of Indians across the country switched off lights at their homes and lit candles and diyas or turned on mobile phone torches on Sunday night. The idea was to showcase the nation’s “collective resolve and solidarity” in its fight against COVID19 with this symbolic gesture of lighting up the night skies with diyas and candle lights.
PM Modi urged the people of India to light a ‘Diya’, candle or torch or mobiles on April 5, at 9 pm for 9 minutes from the balconies or corridors of their homes. This is solely to highlight the objective that all the 130 crores Indian are fighting together during this Coronavirus pandemic. Also to indicate that no one is fighting this alone and every Indian is in it together. This is also a gesture to thank the people who abided by the lockdown rules and helped prevent the transmission of the coronavirus.
FAKE NEWS/RUMOUR: A WhatsApp forward that stated that April 5 and Vamana Dwadashi fall on the same date is wrong. As in Hindu calendar, Vaman Dwadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad month. Currently, the Hindi calendar is observing Chaitra month and not Bhadrapad!
FAKE NEWS/RUMOUR: One WHATSAPP message states that the heat that we will generate from the lamps would increase the temperature of the surroundings which would then kill the Coronavirus. This claim is also false and baseless.
FAKE NEWS/RUMOUR:One social media message forward that states that PM Modi had a conversation with NASA scientist Thomas Shelby is wrong, as no such official statement has been released.
FAKE NEWS/RUMOUR: PM Modi’s announcement with Numerology 9 message also seems to be wrong at two points as neither his speech timing was of 9 minutes and neither today is the 9th day post lockdown.
Like this, many messages have such counterpoints that could prove their assumptions as baseless.
April 5, 9 pm event was only suggested so as to foster the idea of unity amongst the citizens of the country.
To show their support, a lot of Bollywood stars were seen standing in solidarity of the initiative named ‘9 Baje 9 minute’ where people were expected to switch off all the lights of their home and come to their balconies with a lamp, diya or a torch.
Several celebs were spotted doing the same. Abhishek & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Kartik Aaryan, Diana Penty, Anushka Sharma, Virat Kohli, Alia Bhatt and many more took to Instagram to share their pictures with lights and diyas.
Anushka in her insta account, “I light a diya everyday for many years now. And as I light the diya I seek guidance, asking for the darkness in me to be dispelled. For many days since the turn of the recent events across the world, I have prayed to God to end the suffering of so many who are losing their lives without their families beside them, for the less-fortunate and the needy whose lives have turned upside down completely, for all the healthcare professionals who are working tirelessly & bravely to protect the lives of other beings, for those who are uncertain about their jobs and future. So tonight, I prayed extra for everyone and I lit diyas with the whole of India and we all prayed for each other. Prayers never go in vain.”
While Akshay wrote, “Together we stand and together we will come out of this dark phase. Till then stay strong, stay safe.” Check out all the posts here.
This was the second such mass activity undertaken by the citizens of the country after PM Modi’s March 22 Janata Curfew initiative, where people clapped and clung utensils to express gratitude to those who have been providing essential services during the coronavirus crisis.
